Choosing the Right Suspension Modifications for Your Car

Uzone.id – Car suspension modification is one of the most popular ways to change the look and performance of a vehicle. Several types of suspension modifications are commonly used, namely lowering kits, lift kits, coilovers, and air suspension. Each has different characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages.

1. Lowering Kit

Lowering kits are specifically designed to lower the vehicle’s height from the ground. The main component of a lowering kit is a per that is shorter than the standard per. With this modification, there are advantages and disadvantages.

Starting from the advantages, usually, suspension modifications using lowering kits can make the appearance more sporty and aggressive. On the other hand, handling is better at high speeds. Plus the center of gravity is lower, improving stability.

On the flip side, using a lowering kit for your suspension comes with some downsides. It limits the space for suspension movement, which can make your ride less comfortable, especially on bumpy roads.

Additionally, lowering the car reduces ground clearance, making it more likely to scrape against potholes. Plus, installing a lowering kit requires you to readjust the wheel geometry to ensure stability and prevent uneven tire wear.

“Lowering a car can significantly improve its handling characteristics, but it’s important to balance performance with ride comfort. Reducing ground clearance too much can lead to bottoming out and damage to the undercarriage,” uttered Ken Block, an American professional rally driver and car modification icon.

2. Lift Kit

Contrary to lowering kits, lift kits are used to increase the vehicle’s height from the ground. The main components of a lift kit are longer springs and spacers for the shock absorber. Usually, this type of modification is intended for cars that will be used on roads without asphalt, aka offroad.

Lift kits have the advantage of increasing ground clearance, suitable for offroad terrain or uneven roads. Using a lift kit provides better approach and departure angles. Lift kit suspension users allow the use of tires with a larger profile.

Behind the advantages of a suspension with a lift kit, there are still disadvantages to be aware of, as the appearance becomes taller and less sporty. On the other hand, the handling of cars using lift kits at high speeds can be less stable. Not to mention, the center of gravity becomes higher, reducing stability.

3. Coilover

Coilovers are a combination of per and shock absorbers in one unit. The height and hardness of the per can be adjusted separately, thus providing great flexibility in tuning. Several advantages and disadvantages can be found in cars using coilover suspension.

First, coilover suspensions usually have very flexible tuning, allowing you to adjust the height and firmness of the suspension according to your preferences and road conditions. By using coilovers, handling and performance can be significantly improved. This component can also boost a sportier and more aggressive look.

However, coilover suspension has its drawbacks such as being more expensive than a standard lowering kit or lift kit. Installation is also more complicated and requires special skills. Users of coilover suspensions must also pay attention to the more frequent maintenance required.

“Coilovers offer unparalleled customization options, allowing enthusiasts to fine-tune their suspension setup to their exact preferences. However, it’s crucial to have the right tools and knowledge to adjust them properly,” said Tjin Tjin, a renowned custom car builder from the Netherlands.

4. Air Suspension

Air suspension uses compressed air to control the height of the vehicle. This system allows you to raise or lower the vehicle electronically with the push of a button.

In terms of the advantages of air suspension, as mentioned earlier, it can adjust the height of the vehicle. It can usually be adjusted in real time according to road conditions or preferences. In terms of use, air suspension has excellent ride comfort. This, of course, can also affect the appearance that can be changed.

Behind the many advantages of air suspension, this component is known for its high price. Its installation also requires a complex system and more frequent maintenance. Not to mention electrical issues, the instantaneous height adjustment makes air suspension have a weakness in potential electrical problems.

“Air suspension systems have revolutionized the way we modify cars. They offer incredible versatility and comfort, but they can also be complex and expensive to maintain,” claimed Akira Nakai, an RWB (Rauh-Welt Begriff) car builder from Japan.

Each type of suspension modification has different advantages and disadvantages. It is important to consider carefully before choosing the right type of suspension to suit your needs and preferences. It’s best to consult a specialized modification workshop for recommendations.
