Uzone.id – Motorcycles have always been a symbol of speed and adrenaline. For many riders, the thrill of racing down the highway, easily overtaking cars as the speedometer climbs over 100 mph, is an unbeatable experience.
As global car manufacturers ramp up their production of electric vehicles, it’s only natural that the motorcycle industry follows suit. Among their ambitions, some brands are setting out to design electric bikes that can achieve remarkable speeds. Indeed, today’s electric motorcycles are being built with performance at the forefront.
With cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) technology becoming increasingly reliable, manufacturers are eager to test the limits of speed. Some companies are focused on developing electric motorcycles that can compete with high-performance NASCAR cars, while others are working to make these speedy machines accessible for everyday riders.
“The use of permanently magnetized electric motors and advanced cooling systems has allowed us to reach speeds that were previously unthinkable,” said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla.
Based on various sources, here are the 5 fastest electric motors in the world today.
- Volt Lacama from Italy
The list begins with the Volt Lacama from Italy, which comes with two battery options. There is the lighter “Hyperlight” battery, which offers a top speed of just 105 mph, but there is also the more powerful “Hyperpower” battery, which is capable of reaching speeds of 230 km/h or 143 mph. This bike is quite fast and stylish. Since we’re looking at the fastest bikes, this entry will only focus on the Hyperpower battery option.
Along with a top speed of 143 mph, the Hyperpower battery also produces 169 ft-lbs of torque with a range of up to 160 miles. The regenerative braking system provides four adjustable levels that range from zero to three, which determine how much kinetic energy is converted into electric power.
Speaking of adjustable levels, the Lacama lets the driver choose one of four different riding modes, not too dissimilar from the Kawasaki e-1 motorcycle, each of which offers a different riding experience based on the driver’s preferences and road conditions. The modes are labeled “Rocket!,” “Sport,” “Eco,” and “Wet.” For the best acceleration, riders will want to use the “Rocket!” setting.
- Energica Ego RS
Energica Motors is a motorcycle brand from Italy that developed one of the fastest electric motorcycles in the world The current result is the Ego+ RS. It is a motorcycle that not only closely resembles an everyday sport bike, but also has a maximum speed of 150 mph.
Since the Ego+ RS was developed for both the race track and the highway, it’s not enough to have a motorcycle that can sustain top speeds. A racing motorcycle must be able to outperform its competitors from the starting line. Energica’s Ego+ RS does this very well with an impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, and it produces 171 horsepower with 164 ft-lbs of torque.
- Damon Hypersport Premier
Damon Motors developed the fastest electric motorcycle with the dream of being able to touch 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds. Achieving that speed has always been the pride of every automotive manufacturer in the world. Therefore, the Canadian brand has created an electric motorcycle with this capability called Damon’s Hypersport, which is claimed to be able to break 200 mph.
The drive system named “Hyperdrive”, which the company boasts as “the world’s first monocoque, multi-variant, 100% electric drive system,” also produces 200 horsepower with 200 Nm (147 ft-lb) of torque. The power is transmitted to the wheels with two selectable riding modes commuter and sport. Additionally, the bike has a combined range of 200 miles before needing a full charge. While an adapter is required, the motor can be charged at a Tesla Supercharger.
- Lightning LS-218
Lightning Motors created the LS-218 which is targeted to be able to race at Pikes Peak. It is the only mass-produced consumer-grade electric motorcycle capable of reaching a speed of 218 mph. It is one of the few capable of surpassing the 200 mph speed milestone. The IPM liquid-cooled motor produces 244 horsepower and 220 ft-lbs of torque.
More impressively, the Lightning can go from 0 to 60 mph in two seconds. The LS-218 also performs well in terms of distance, as a single charge can propel the rider 188 miles. Not far enough? Upgrading to the 380V 20 kWh battery pack will increase its range to 255 miles. Using the 28 kWh Lightning-Fast charging system increases this to 335 miles – that’s enough to take you from the edge of Idaho to the Pacific.
- Voxan Wattman
This motorcycle is not on the sales floor in any showroom in the world. Voxan Motors designed the Wattman from scratch with only one goal in mind – speed. A speed of 283 mph was once only achievable by gas-powered vehicles, but Voxan set out to change that and succeeded.
Engineers made the Wattman’s frame from space-grade steel. To improve the bike’s aerodynamics, engineers removed the radiator and used dry ice contained in a tank under the driver’s seat to prevent the bike from overheating.
When designing the battery, engineers didn’t have to worry about the range to reach top speed, but rather power. They packed more than 1,400 power cells into a battery that can produce 317 kW of power with a capacity of 15.9 kWh. Perhaps one day electric motorcycles available to consumers will incorporate the technology Voxan developed with Wattman.
